Gene is the author of 13 published books. His stories and poems have appeared in more than five hundred magazines, anthologies, and textbooks.
It’s no co-incidence that much of his writing centers on baseball. In his high school days he prided himself on his ability to recite up-too-date batting averages of most big league players. He had the pleasure and honor of later interviewing more than one hundred of those players for three books about baseball in the 1950s.
Until his passing, he played between sixty and eighty softball games a year on the Lake Keowee softball team from Seneca, SC. From 2006-12 he played about 20 baseball games a year with his son Tim in the Great American Pastime Baseball League in Simpsonville, SC, where he baffled hitters with his slow curve.
His teaching career includes having taught English and creative writing in colleges in Illinois, Texas, and Alabama; and in high schools in Illinois, Texas, and Georgia.
